My heart goes out to all his family and friends. My condolences.💜 he was a great man and Dr.

I wish I'd known before tonight. I'd be there!

It is with heavy hearts we share that Dr. John Vincent Pender, Jr., age 87, passed away the evening of September 4, 2023, surrounded by his family.

He was a home-grown Memphian born at St. Joseph Hospital, educated at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, Christian Brothers High School, Christian Brothers College (University now), Memphis State (now The University of Memphis), and the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. He did a rotating internship at the old John Gaston Hospital, and in 1967 he was board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Then under the rules of the draft after deferment through college he did his duty in the United States Air Force as Captain in the Strategic Air Command, SAC, October 1961-September 1963. During the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, he was the physician assigned to a team going to Cuba. The crisis was averted, but he was ready.

After the military he did a pediatric residency at University of Arkansas in Little Rock for one year then did a second year at the University of Tennessee Le Bonheur. October 1965, he started his private practice, Pediatric Associates, P.C. here in Memphis, TN. In 2013 he was named the Senior Pediatrician of the Year by the Tennessee Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. After practicing pediatrics well over 50 years Le Bonheur bought Pediatric Associates in October 2013, then he officially retired in 2018.

He was an incredible man, a beautiful life, a forever lasting legacy. He touched so many peoples’ lives in a very special way. Official Hugger, life of the party, biggest smile, kindest heart and beautiful soul.

The visitation will be held at Canale Funeral Home on Friday, September 8, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 PM with the rosary starting at 7:00 pm. The funeral is Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 10:00 AM at St. Louis Catholic Church with the burial following at Calvary Cemetery.

Please remember Dr. Pender and his family in your prayers.

I worked for this kind man and great doctor – Heaven gained a special care giver.

Thank you Dr. Pender!

He was my pediatrician growing up. Always will remember his kindness and his animals on his stethoscope. I’m so sorry to hear this. Praying for his family.

Dr. Pender was an incredible soul. He’s one of the people who made me want to work with children. As I sit in my first grade classroom, I shed a few tears for my childhood doctor who saw me until his retirement. (Which may or may not have been my sophomore year of college) He left this corner of the world better than he found it. That is all any of us can hope for. May he rest easy. I know he’s got a great mansion up there.

Prayers for everyone. He truly found his calling in pediatrics. He was my dr in Frayser and my son’s doctor in Raleigh before he retired. He will be missed.

Dr. Pender was a wonderful Pediatrician. He treated babies with such compassion & gentleness. He would sing to distract from shots & it worked! He was truly a Blessing.
🙏🏽Rest in Paradise🙏🏽

Condolences to the family! October 19th will never be the same!

Rest In Peace to my pediatrician and he saw my children also
